UK Introduces eVisa System: No Need to Submit Passports During Visa Processing
The United Kingdom has introduced a major change to its immigration system by launching a digital eVisa system, eliminating the need for applicants to submit their passports during the visa processing stage. The new system came into effect on 25 February 2026 as part of the UK government’s move toward a fully digital immigration process.
Under the updated process, traditional visa stickers placed inside passports are being replaced with electronic visas (eVisas). This means applicants can now keep their passports with them while their visa application is being processed, making the process more convenient and flexible for travelers.
Applicants will still need to complete the visa application online and attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) for biometric verification such as fingerprints and photographs. However, after the appointment, the passport will be returned to the applicant the same day instead of being held by the visa office.
Once the visa is approved, travelers will receive their eVisa digitally through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This digital visa will be linked electronically to the traveler’s passport and can be accessed online to confirm immigration status, visa type, and conditions such as permission to work or study.
The introduction of eVisas offers several benefits for travelers. Since passports are no longer retained during processing, applicants can use their passports to travel or apply for visas to other countries while waiting for the UK decision. The system also improves efficiency, reduces paperwork, and strengthens security through digital verification.
The UK government has already implemented eVisas for millions of people as part of its long-term plan to modernize border control and immigration services. With this update, digital visas are becoming the default proof of immigration status for most travelers entering the UK.
Conclusion
The launch of the UK eVisa system marks a significant step toward digital immigration services. For international travelers and visa applicants, the new system provides greater convenience, faster access to visa information, and the flexibility to keep their passports during processing, making the overall visa application experience smoother and more efficient.
