Canada Raises Express Entry Work Experience Requirement to 12 Months From 2026
From February 18, 2026, Canada’s immigration authorities introduced a significant change to the Express Entry system. The rule that previously allowed candidates to qualify for category-based draws with as little as six months of work experience has now been tightened. Applicants must have at least 12 months of relevant work experience to be eligible for most Express Entry occupational categories.
What the New Rule Means
Under the revised framework:
- Minimum work experience is now 12 months instead of six for category-based Express Entry draws.
- This experience must be in a single eligible occupation listed under Express Entry categories like healthcare, STEM, trades, education, and others.
- The experience must have been gained within the last three years before the application or profile submission.
- Work can be full-time (30+ hours per week) or a combination of part-time jobs that add up to the equivalent of 1,560 hours.
- The experience does not need to be continuous; gaps between jobs are acceptable as long as total hours meet the requirement.
This rule applies across all occupational categories that fall under Canada’s category-based Express Entry selection system.
Why This Update Matters
Category-based Express Entry draws give priority to candidates with work experience in certain in-demand occupations, increasing their chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. By raising the experience threshold:
- It aims to ensure that candidates have stronger, more substantial work histories.
- It also reduces the number of profiles eligible for targeted draws, which could affect competition and Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cutoffs. Some experts expect lower cutoffs in some rounds because the eligible pool has narrowed.
- Candidates who were relying on short stints of experience, such as six months in one occupation, will now need to build their profiles further before they qualify.
How to Meet the Requirement
If you’re planning to apply under Express Entry in 2026, here’s what to keep in mind:
- Check your occupation’s NOC to make sure it’s in an eligible skill category (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3).
- Calculate your hours to ensure you’ve reached at least 1,560 hours (equivalent to 12 months of full-time work).
- Ensure the work falls within the last three years before submitting your profile or applying.
- Avoid counting unrelated roles or experience in multiple occupations toward this total.
Experience gained while studying full-time or through unpaid internships does not count toward the requirement.
Bottom Line
Canada’s Express Entry system hasn’t changed its core structure, but the threshold for work experience eligibility in category-based selection rounds has been raised to one full year of relevant experience. This makes it crucial for applicants to plan their work history carefully, especially if they’re close to the six-month mark but not yet at twelve months.
Staying informed about these updates and preparing your profile accordingly will help you position yourself for success under the new Express Entry rules.
